Story behind the art:
My inspiration behind our garden (more on that below) is equal parts retreat and play. These yellow fox gloves are 100% in the “playful” category in my mind. The way they sway in the wind, their darling bell shaped flowers seem to laugh as they bob back and forth, inviting you into their joy. I’ve been especially captivated by yellow tones for this collection. So much light and fun comes from this delightful color that I have skipped over in the past. I love how it compliments many of my more natural color palettes so well—pinks, greens and blues. It brings new life and a fresh perspective for me and I have so enjoyed hanging this piece in our own home to see first hand how it lights up a room.
The Secret Garden Collection:
My Secret Garden series was inspired by my day dreams for the garden that “could be” behind our own little home. We’re slowly making this house a home by adding elements of ourselves into every nook and cranny. The back garden is my favorite place to spend summer months—the sound of our boys playing and exploring, dirt and flower petals at my fingertips, produce emerging or waiting to be harvested, the buzz of insects and the whispers and dreams we share together among the developing landscape around us.
Because this series is so personal and raw to me, I wanted the artwork to reflect some of that vulnerability. Each print in this series was intentionally prepared to preserve the texture and marks of the original illustration—you can even find some of my initial pencil marks throughout the piece.
I tested and searched for several months to find the perfect cotton paper to print these pieces on. The one I landed on has a soft touch, subtle texture and a hint of creaminess to the white of the paper to take off the harsh crisp finish (but not a yellow or pink look, don’t worry!). It is truly delightful and yes, you can paint on it!
