Story Behind the Art:
Similar to the Tonal Irises drawing, this botanical is born from a study of my heirloom daffodils. Passed down from the garden of my great great grandparents, these daffodils are the first thing to bloom in my garden and their stately, delicate form brings hope and grace to help us through the final harsh weeks before warm weather returns. Because of the mirrored sentiments between the two pieces, I originally designed these pieces to hang together, but I love that they can stand alone.
Tonal Botanicals Collection:
This collection was born out of my love for history. After sorting through my own student work on newsprint and flipping through some of my art history books, my fingers began to itch to bring back some of that aesthetic into my own artwork. The traditional aspect of a full pencil shaded drawing, the tonal play and interest of tinted papers and added highlights excited me and I was quickly addicted.
My goal with this collection is to capture much of the same delicate and playful illustrations that are featured in my other artwork, but with a more historic and formal way. I love mixing these pieces in with watercolors or line drawings as the darker, tonal papers have a way of grounding a gallery wall or collection and bringing a new sense of balance to the entire space.
