Story Behind the Art:
The original tonal drawing, created for a lesson in the Pencil Shading Course, featured irises from my own garden. These Irises were passed down from my great aunt, to my grandmother and eventually down to me. I don’t have many “family heirlooms”, but I love having a few living heirlooms that have been grown and enjoyed and divided and passed through the family. It brings a whole new sense of cozy joy to the garden every year—our happy place to spend our hours every spring and summer. I also carried on this idea through the symbolism of the piece. The strength of the stems supports the whole family—both buds and blooms in peek—born from the same rhizome, sharing beauty now and preparing more for the future.
Tonal Botanicals Collection:
This collection was born out of my love for history. After sorting through my own student work on newsprint and flipping through some of my art history books, my fingers began to itch to bring back some of that aesthetic into my own artwork. The traditional aspect of a full pencil shaded drawing, the tonal play and interest of tinted papers and added highlights excited me and I was quickly addicted.
My goal with this collection is to capture much of the same delicate and playful illustrations that are featured in my other artwork, but with a more historic and formal way. I love mixing these pieces in with watercolors or line drawings as the darker, tonal papers have a way of grounding a gallery wall or collection and bringing a new sense of balance to the entire space.
